Hi, I am currently in Australia for work and am looking at cars while i'm here. I've spotted a factory slicktop manual in reasonable condition but with some mechanical faults (engine is currently in limp home mode), advertised for $3000 AUD.

Recently I saw a slicktop in tidy but tired condition in NZ go for $4600, with a blown head gasket. -However this car was registered.

By the time I paid for shipping, fees, tax and compliance on this car, i'd be looking at a minimum of $7000 I think, and that's before any repair work.

Hard question to answer, but what im wondering is, would it be worth the risk? Slicktops are rare so it's hard to gauge the value. but it seems working auto TT's are going for a minimum of 8-9k on Trademe these days.
I'd actually prefer a T-top but the potential higher value of a slicktop is appealing.

Are you looking at purchasing then bringing back to NZ? If so id probably say no and just buy one already in NZ,

If it is in limp mode it WILL show ECU fault codes which takes 5minutes to check.

The only reason i can think of a 300zx not running right because of the "radiator" as he stated will be the temp sensor to the ecu, meaning the ecu doesn't know what temp the engine is at which means its fuel maps are all over the show and wont run at all or will run like a dog with 3 legs.

There are a few nice tidy hardtops in NZ that do come up for sale for around the 10k mark, as you said spending around 7k not including repairs doesn't seem worth the hassle at all, + it doesn't even look good Wink.

That's just my opinion

Yes, was thinking of bringing it back to NZ. It is a bit rough around the edges but most 300zx's are these days.

Looking at trademe recently (and right now), my observation of prices is:

Auto N/As seem to start at 5-6, with manuals maybe 7-8. TT autos 8-10 and TT manuals 12+. Autos vastly outnumber manuals.
There's a couple rough-as-guts manual N/As in the mid 5's range, and a couple dreamers want 12+ for auto TT/manual N/A's.

Slicktops are harder for me to place as they aren't for sale much, but i've heard as they are rarer they are more valuable - so based on the prices of the other models I don't believe you would be seeing a TT manual slicktop for 10k these days?
Prices seem to be going up, Sold my auto TT for 5,000 a few years back.

Have sent you a pm.

There is also a slick top here in nelson a 2 seater manual twin turbo. dereg, drives fine but doesn't boost and passenger bank is very low on compression 60psi, although it does drive fine just no power and doesn't boost so turbos probably broken as well or just very low compression it can't build boost.

He was asking $2,000 which I said was way over priced for what it was after viewing because it was rough as even though it was a factory 2 seater manual hard top but dereg with a basically blown engine and rough body. Told him id give him $1500 but he said no. 2 years later he is still trying to sell it for $2,000 yet in worse condition when i first viewed since its been sitting outside in the weather. He should of taken my offer at the start. I wouldn't pay more than $1,000 for it in its current condition.
